Marysville prospered during the Gold Rush era, becoming one of the largest cities in California. In 1857 alone, over $10 million in gold was shipped from Marysville's banks to the U.S. Mint in San Francisco. The Marysville Chinatown is the last Chinatown of the California Gold Rush. The still active Bok Kai Temple is the only Taoist temple in the U.S. with Bok Eye, the god of the north who controls water and floods, as the central deity. The temple is also unique because it still has an active community of worshipers and remains in the hands of the local Chinese community. It is further distinguished by its elaborate murals which are believed to be the only example of their types in the United States.
