Camp Far West. It is estimated that more than 30,000 people - pioneers, miners, trappers, herdsmen, and
adventurers and their families used the Emigrant Trail in 1849 alone, and Johnson's Ranch was the first
settlement west of the Sierra for these emigrants to refresh their supplies and get bearings in the
Sacramento Valley. In late winter of 1847, five women and two men, naked and near death from starvation
and exposure, stumbled into Johnson's Ranch, alerting rescuers to the plight of the tragically snowbound
Donner Party. Donner Party relief parties assembled at Johnson's Ranch to begin their mission to rescue
the survivors. One survivor, Mary Murphy, married William Johnson. She quickly divorced him, however, and
soon married Charles Covillaud, founder of the City of Marysville, which is named after Mary. In 1866,
the town of Wheatland was laid out in a portion of the grant. At Wheatland, 12 miles south of Marysville
on Highway 65.

See Marysville from an entirely new perspective. Constructed and reconstructed over several decades
beginning in the 1850's, these are some of the strongest levees in California, and residents frequently use
them for daily exercise. Driving on most parts of the levees is not permitted, but stairs are located behind
the Bok Kai Temple at
First and D streets, and the levees can be accessed from various other locations in
the city. Levee road surfaces vary in composition. Please follow all signage instructions.
Yuba City has miles paved levees as well. The levee runs parallel with the Feather River. Access
points are located at Lynn Way, Teegarden Avenue, Bridge Street and Airport Road. Unpaved portions of the
levee continue North to Live Oak and South towards Sacramento.

CA 95962

Renaissance Vineyard & Winery is considered a rare exception in North America, as it offers a true
"mountain environment". While many other high-elevation vineyards are actually planted on releatively flat,
fertile-soil valleys that happen to be located within mountain areas, Renaissance – with its soaring
elevations ranging from 1,100 to 2,300 feet – is the real thing.
James Halliday, author of "The Wine Atlas of California", claims, "If there is a more remarkable vineyard in
California, I did not see it."
Come visit us! Our Lakeside Tasting Room is open Monday through Saturday, 11-3.00 pm. Tour and tasting

Timbuctoo and Smartsville [Map]
Visit the remnants of a Gold Rush Wells Fargo Office in the community of Timbuctoo that assayed, purchased and
shipped millions of dollars worth of gold from Northern mines. In 1855, Timbuctoo was one of the largest towns
in eastern Yuba County. At the height of its prosperity it contained a church, theatre, stores, hotels, saloons
and the Wells Fargo Office. Sixteen miles east of Marysville on Highway 20. A historic plaque is located on
Highway 20, on Timbuctoo Road one mile west of Smartsville.
The first building at Smartsville was built in the spring of 1856 by Mr. Smart. The U.S. Post Office calls the
town Smartville, creating a long-running debate; Smartville or Smartsville? The Church of the Immaculate Conception
was built in 1861 and the Union Church was built in 1863. The Smartsville Cemetery can be seen on a hill.
